Until it was programmed to
properly do so, it didn't in so far as it was a mess without it.
The fact that my car will run and drive forward without them doesn't mean that tires are unnecessary for the function of my car as dictated by the manufacturer until such time as the car is designed not to require them. (Cars with tank treads!)
