I live in an apartment and have a 5.1 system setup. I got a Pioneer receiver very similar to this:

and small speakers by KEF (don't see them on the site anymore), but you could get something like this ($250 off until tomorrow!)

Won't be wireless (wired sound is better anyways) but it'll be versatile, you can set up anything with it, and it won't be too overpowering for apartment life. Doesn't have to be expensive either, I got my stuff on boxing day for less than $500 all in.

I agree, stay away from HTIB they are no good, separate components are so much better.
