Those big deadline moves for Lester and Price ultimately did not help either of those clubs this year. No doubt Oakland got too sabremetric and didn't realize the impact of taking a power bat out of the middle of their lineup even though his advanced stats were pretty average. Detroit, again, lost Austin Jackson and Drew Smyly in the Price deal. What could they have done had they kept those two players and traded minor leaguers for some relief help.
Realistically that whole series changed when Ausmus took Anibal Sanchez out of game 2. I don't see why he didn't at least bring him out for the 8th inning. Personally I would have tried to get 4 innings out of him to finish that game.
Good for KC though, they have been collecting players for years, and finally Gordon, Moustakas, and Hosmer are all hitting at the same time. There is talent on that team, but they haven't been able to put it together for years.
