Like a lot of college players, he was a late developer. He didn't start his freshman year at Union until he was 20 years-old.
In his 17 year-old season, he was still playing Midget AAA. In his 18 and 19 year-old seasons, he played Jr A. By the time he started college, and got on the scouts' radar, he was no longer draft eligible.
Once he was in the NCAA, he couldn't sign an NHL contract until he decided he was ready to leave college. My understanding is that a lot of teams were interested in him, but believed he was going to play his senior year last season. The Flames were able to convince him to leave college early and got him signed just before he was about to return to school.
