Not only that, but potential to use powers. That's why I think there was a rush to vote him out. Mafia knew he wasn't mafia and were afraid he could come out with some special power. It made no sense to not let him come in during the evening and give one final chance to use it. Moot as he didn't, but I strongly believe that's what the mafia was trying to stop.
