In junior they are billeted with families and often have their comings and goings monitored a bit more. Although I have heard different WHL teams take different approach, some more hands on.
Once buddy makes the NHL, then they are an adult, having to make adult decisions. Many of these players have had decisions made for them their whole lives.
I agree that in small towns they are often rock stars, but once they leave junior and make the NHL, it is ramped up a tonne.
