People are upset because the story in Destiny doesn't live up to Halo expectations, but this isn't Halo and wasn't ever meant to be. What Destiny does, it does extremely well. I encourage you to stick with it until you have an opportunity to try some of the higher level stuff, because at 21, you are just starting to experience mission modifiers, which increase the number of enemies, their aggression levels, forces you to use the right weapon for the right shields, disables respawns, makes it impossible to stagger the AI, reduces the amount of ammo you have at your disposal forcing you to better manage your inventory, etc.
There's a lot of depth here that many people have discovered, because they stuck with it. If all you're doing is story missions on your own, I can definitely see how you'd get bored pretty quickly. I assure you there's more meat to the game than that, though.
