Look, I'm not Muslim. I'm not religious. I'm completely agnostic. And I am very critical of most religious institutions and the regressive influences that they have on their communities. But I don't see how anyone can prove that there is any sort of causal nexus between psychotic behavior like this and the idea of religion itself (or any particular religion). Cruelty like this is carried out all over the world everyday by agnostics, Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Jews alike.
I am not a forensic psychiatrist, and I know absolutely nothing about this individual case, but I strongly suspect that, even if there was no such thing as Islam, or there was no such thing as religion period, this person would have been inspired by the secret messages in Michael Bay's "Transformers" films to harm people he disliked or distrusted or believed were conspiring against him.
