Aside from the obvious smell issues, skunks aren't too bad. As others have mentioned, the key is to remain calm and the skunk will leave you alone. Skunks won't spray unless they feel to be truly in danger, so spraying is a last resort.
I have a couple skunks living underneath my patio and they are not a problem at all. In fact, one night while having a smoke outside, one skunk casually walked underneath my chair, looked up at me kind of as if to say "what's up" and went on it's way.

Any chance you were smoking some "calm" promoting cigarets? No way in hell I'm sticking around to have a dart while a skunk walks under my chair. Then again, i don't smoke...
