Also, passion for a project can do wonders. I think that one of the reasons Breaking Bad turned out the way it did is due to the fact that everyone seemed to love working on that show and they totally bought into the creative direction headed by Vince Gilligan.
Even Norris' character started kind of hokey, almost working as part of the comic relief until Saul was introduced. As the show evolved and the actor became more personally connected to the character and material you could see Norris ramp it up. Especially in the final 8.
