As trackercowe said, that movie also had good writing and directing, but as he also said, I get your point.
I have oft argued how a good director (and good lines from the writers) will get a great performance from an actor that may not be great. Dean Norris in Breaking Bad is a great example. Very good in Breaking Bad. However, I haven't really seen him be good in anything else. Under the Dome, guest spots on other cop shows, all average to bad.
So for True Detective, which has shown to have good direction and writing, I will watch Vince and hold my breath. I don't think he'll be bad, to be fair, he just wouldn't have been my first choice (or second, or fifth, etc.)
