PM rotten42, he's in the office furniture industry and helped me out with some great insight a little while back when I was looking.

RGO and COI are probably the places to go to if you want nice furniture (Herman Miller, Steelcase etc). One cheaper manufacturer you might also want to check out is Artopex. A step below the higer end manufacturers, but ive heard they make nice stuff for the money.

Oh and I know you said no Ikea, but they did just come out with a new line of tables called Bekant to replace the Gallant series. I haven't seen it in person myself though, but visually it doesn't look terrible. Im curious to see what the build quality is like.
