Yeah the weather is just the easiest reason/excuse to pull the plug. There's a litany of other reasons to pull the pin on this mess, weather is probably the path of least resistance.
"Well the medics have advised that they can't guarantee the safety & health of those attending. So really, it's a safety issue."
