I've tried a variety of music player apps, and none of them do gapless playback, and options for headphones with controls seem to be really limited. I tend to use my smartphone as an Ipod becuase I walk to and from work every day, but its a PITA to take the phone out of my pocket whenever I want to change tracks or take a call.
Are the newer android phones any better as music players, or is it still an afterthought? The biggest draw for me to go back to Iphone is its also a full fledged Ipod with all the benefits. Which is unfortunate, becuase I think for most other features I actually prefer android.

Music is great with Google Play. You also get the choice of other music players if that suits your preference. iTunes music can also be synced to your phone using Google's Music Manager. It'll scan your iTunes folder and the music will just show up on your Google Play Music account once you set it up. I did exactly that when I migrated my music collection over.
I hear poweramp is great for gapless.
