Maybe there are other "better ways but some people would argue thatkids/young adults lack the aspect of taking responsibility for their actions and respect for other people in general. They would say that spankings, in the previous generations, is how people were instilled with those aspects.
Am I saying I agree completely with it? Nope but I think there are some shreds of truth to that argument.

Hitting a kid doesn't teach respect it teaches fear. Hitting a kid with a branch or switch or whatever stupid name you want to call it is abuse.
