I think that the thing to remember is that different mediums mean different ways of telling stories. We all know that great books do not always mean great movies - Lord of the Rings is an example where the books and the movies are both great, but the reason why is that the Peter Jackson decided to focus on the key essentials of the books and present great visuals. When you combine the visuals from the movie with detail of the books, you get a great over all story.
The problem with superhero movies is that the mythology of the stories is over several hundred (or more) comics. And every few years, the characters are reimaged. It is impossible to jam all of that into a two hour movie - all you can do is the essentials. And it is really hard if characters are not cast to what you imagine them to be (Bruce Wayne anyone?).
Although I really enjoyed X-Men, Spidey and Fantastic Four movies (I read the comics) it is almost easier to watch Batman and Superman as I am not as familiar with the mythos.
To be absolutely honest, the best media for comic book superheros is in, well, comic books, because there is a surprising degree of freedom both from a time perspective, but from what can be drawn versus what can be filmed - plus like books, your imagination is an important part of the comic book perspective.
