Yes switch is a common word, especially in the South. My dad's mom used to make him go out to the backyard tree and pick his "switch" when he was young. If she thought he was being cute by picking the smallest one he'd get swats with it and then have to go get a real one. I got whippings when I was young so to me, it's just discipline.....albeit my parents never targeted my testicles. If I talked back or did something bad in school I got whippings when I got home. After a couple times I decided I'd rather not act up than get spanked.
I'm 32 and when I was in grade school our principal still gave swats up until I was in 6th grade.
