I've been wondering whether or not to reply over the last few days, and finally decided to do so. I honestly believe that rather than go with words and a poll, let the users discuss with action rather than words and revisit this issue in a few weeks or a months time.
Since it seems that the poll is not really valid anymore as it seems like individuals have since changed their minds and/or have been enlightened, if I were a mod (and I am not), I would suggest doing a probation period. The expectation is that the YLYL thread cleans up its act and also that the majority of individuals who have posted and commented in this thread clean up their act in comments around the site as well.
In the probation period, if the YLYL thread shows it can self moderate, then sure, maybe we can go with consensus and keep it as it and allow it to self moderate. Consider doing a revote in a months time? I don't know. This thread has gotten to the point where some individuals are either like, "If I knew this offended people, I would have stopped." or some just continue to act like jackasses. Most agree that there are issues with comments across the site. Why not we as enlightened individuals who have read the thread now call people out for some comments. No need for all out shaming, just stuff like, "That was a mean comment." or "Too far bro". A step at a time?
I know I have not been here long and am not as deeply rooted into the community as others may be here, but I do believe that there is a way to take a step forward without alienating or shaming or fighting each other along the way.
Just my 2 cents, take it as you will. I'm open to rejection of the idea. I can't say I have a solid grasp on the magnitude of the issue as at this point yet.
