Yes you read right, the Florida Panthers traded goaltender Marty Turco and a prospect to the Toronto Maple Leafs for goaltender Manny Fernandez and Jim Vandermeer.

It might surprise some that the Panthers love this trade and are VERY happy to have Fernandez in the fold. Why? Good question. GM Penney thinks he's the better goaltender.

Fernandez(NHL): 58GP - 2.29GAA - 0.919Sv%

Fernandez(CPHL) 81OV 83ST

It has been said time and time again that OV doesnt mean everything and this is a clear indication of that. The Panthers downgraded from an 82 to an 81 but they upgraded significantly in ST, which is said to play a big factor in how well a goalie performs.

Fernandez is also cheaper AND the Panthers get a great young defenceman in Jim Vandermeer.

GM Penney expects some GM's to scratch their heads at this deal because of the love around this place for Turco. But he firmly believes that Fernandez is the better player and will prove it during the 2006-07 CPHL season.
