Interesting choice of metaphor, given that both the red A and yellow star were symbols used to further persecute an already-persecuted group. A better analogy would have been Brad Pitt in
Inglorious Basterds carving swastikas onto the foreheads of Nazis.
I do agree with your general point that public shaming is not the best tactic to elicit positive behaviour changes, though. I'm not going to tell the mods how to do their job, but my preferred approach is to publicly highlight good behaviour while privately explaining to problem posters exactly why what they're doing isn't acceptable. If they continue to be a problem after multiple warnings, then their accounts get temporarily suspended or banned.
