“This is your first real evaluation tool,” says Treliving. “From an individual basis . . . seeing how people fit within a team concept, seeing if there’s chemistry with certain people. Who rises above? Who struggles?

“Having said that, it’s still very early. Rookie games. Rookie camp. A lot of nervous players. There’s probably not a whole lot of chemistry right off the bat, with just throwing everybody together. So you have to tread cautiously to a certain extent, but it will be exciting to . . . get everyone together.”

“There’s a greater emphasis in getting a read on some of these guys,” says Treliving, in his first season with the Flames. “You saw a lot of them in July, so you want to see where they’re at now in September, how their training has gone, who’s done what. Now you’re getting a little better sense of their game . . . and what they can do in a competitive environment.”
