I thought that, too until I got my N4. Now I think 4.7 is a good compromise. The only part of the screen I have trouble reaching is the top right and I have pretty stubby thumbs. The thinness should also help it not feel too large in your pocket.
That said, 5.5" is flippin gigantic.
