You don't have to go far to get a great deal on houses in the US. Portland and Seattle will give you a much bigger bang for your buck than Calgary. Even outside of NY in Long Island you can get a very nice house for 400-500k.
The South is dirty cheap. It's always funny when you're watching House Hunters and some Florida/Georgia single mom is complaining that the massive 4-bedroom property selling for 200k that she is looking at is just not enough house her.
The one thing however you have to watch out for is property taxes. On that front we have it pretty great in Calgary...a lot of places in the US have crazy high taxes. Go to Long Island or Connecticut or something, and you'll probably be paying 15-20k property taxes a year.
That and you also have to account for things like health insurance (easily $500-600+/month per person) as well as education costs (ie, having to send your kid to a 15k/year private school right off the bat). Those things can really quickly make the price of living in Calgary feel (at least a little) less ridiculous.
