van Gaal prefers 4 at the back, but opts for 3 if he thinks the midfield is too weak for that. He only changed to 3-5-2 at the Netherlands when Strootman got injured ... before it was a normal 4-3-3 all the time. I have no idea if he wants to continue with 3 at the back, now that they have brought in Blind, di Maria and Herrera.
If he still wants 3 at the back and wing backs, how about something like this:
Blind played wing back for van Gaal at the WC and is no stranger to the right side either (he almost exclusively played RB for Groningen before moving to Ajax), so I guess that could work. But on paper, I prefer the system that cam_wmh posted ... or even a 4-3-3:
this would always leave one or two of Falcao/van Persie/Rooney/Mata on the bench, that's why it's unlikely ... but at least it would create competition within the squad, di Maria could play where's best and Januzaj would see a lot of minutes too.
