I don't disagree with you - I'm familiar with what a cloud service actually does.
I just don't think most people see it that way. Anecdotally speaking, I know way too many people that don't realize that "Google" and "The Internet" are not actually interchangeable words. And still I'd be willing to bet less than a third of people with an iPhone know if their photo roll is actually stored on iCloud or not without checking.
