I don't know. I dont really see the benefits of a self driving car unless every car is a self driving car and they talk to one another. Until then, you're just trusting a computer to make potentially life saving maneuvers at high speeds.

Self Driving cars TODAY are probably better than humans for everything you wrote. When every car is self driving (if that ever happens) and they can communicate with each other, I don't see why you couldn't have cars travelling at highway speeds within centimetres of each other.
