Because NYC is NOT Rockford, Illinois...where he would be playing for the IceHogs...
I mentioned before, 'Hawks have some NHL ready Wings and with Kane, Hossa, Smith, and Versteeg, with no cap space unless Versteeg gets moved, Hayes was highly unlikely to get any ice time, with the big club.
If he can get top six ice time with the Rags, then more power to him...
But, dominating on a good line in College is no firm predictor of NHL success...this guy, Hayes, was a Baker finalist, the 'Hawks have a Baker WINNER, toiling at the Rock, waiting for his chance...any playing time guarantees, if that what he was waiting for, would be unfair to better prospects in the system.
Personally, I don't think his skating is good enough for the NHL, and he seems ill suited to an "energy" role...a lot of draft picks are misses anyway, so there is little lost to my 'Hawks here...a 1st pick in round 3 is a bit of a re-do, and the 'Hawks have been better than average in finding mid to late round talent.
