Historians are now starting to credit the near east Muslims for preserving much of the Greeko-Roman knowledge of Astronomy, Math, and Engineering, through the dark ages. They are probably focusing mainly on the Ottamans (Turkish) who seem to more or less stay out of the middle east crap today. But from what I understand some vary important work in math was taking place in Todays Iraq while Europeans were busy destroying half of their own bible because it would send the wrong message.
