I guess I don't get it because now that the teenager has been killed, what is the protesting trying to achieve? Just to drum up awareness I guess?

I find that protesting never really achieves anything. It gets the message out but does anyone really believe that U.S. will ever be able to change any of its' systemic issues without a revolution?
The biggest issue that should be targetted is the systemic unequal treatment of Blacks and Hispanics by the Police, Judiciary, Prisons, and drug laws.

These deaths serves as trigger points for these underlying issues wether or not the person killed is guilty or innocent.
