... because the purpose of the draft isn't to engender loyalty. The draft doesn't benefit players, it harms them. Why should some old man saying your name into a microphone 4 years ago impose some kind of moral obligation on someone today?
Hayes getting drafted gave the Hawks 4 years of exclusive contact with Hayes, that they couldn't get it done even with that massive advantage is a failing of the Hawks not Hayes.
