Monitored smoke detection is probably the biggest possible thing they can do for you. Otherwise you're right, it's peace of mind. I have one and was going to drop the monitoring, except for the fact I like the idea of the fire department coming out if my house starts on fire while I'm gone, especially with a pet at home.

I went with SecureTek because they are cheap. I think I pay about $20 a month now that the equipment is paid for. It's not fancy, but it works. Some places have fancier interfaces but are all-in-one units, so someone can just rip it off the wall and smash it and you are done. I like systems with a separate control unit hidden in the basement so if the panel is smashed it still calls out.
