From a hockey perspective, the icing rule came about in amusing fashion. Icing was a common defensive tactic in the days before forward passing out of your own zone. When the New York Americans iced the puck a ridiculous number of times to beat Boston, Charles Adams retaliated by ordering his team to ice the puck constantly the next time the two teams met. The Bruins iced the puck nearly 100 times in a 0-0 draw. The icing rule was introduced the following season.
