Even if he makes no progress at all for the rest of his career, he's already got the ability to carve out an NHL career.

Completely agree with this. While nobody is going to confuse him with Bergeron or Kopitar, he's no worse defensively than most 20-22 yr old offensive forwards. His defensive issues are largely overblown.
