I'd like to think that the "big money" games have a lot of resources and funds being directed to make the games good and thus reviewed well. As opposed to "just" being big money games.
As for Polygon taking Microsoft cash, they're more than happy to admit it outright. Everybody knows they're terrible at reviews. Their in-depth pieces are actually pretty good but they've since gutted those departments with layoffs.
