Well the sheer number of pixels is just over double and the frame rate is the same so you're roughly talking about 4-5 times the previous generation. But you are still right, some people cannot tell (or care if) there is a difference with higher resolutions and/or higher frame rates.
Given the performance difference just between the PS4 and the Xbone alone, maybe there is something to the notion that 360 fans aren't in a rush to upgrade to an Xbone with the minor differences that they are seeing. In fact, I think it was the Xbox Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer that first postulated that, I could be wrong though. I understand it though, like you say if customers just see a minor difference there is little incentive to upgrade to a new generation console (PS4 or Xbone) and the market will reflect that.
