It's not that they can't, it's just easier with a car there. Like I said, a lot of times its just a natural reaction. You crank the wheel into a spot that has another car parked there as a guide. I'm not quite understanding. Guiding yourself into a spot based on two yellow lines is exactly the same as guiding yourself into a spot based on two cars on either side, no?
If anything going by the lines with no cars around is actually easier because you can be a little more careless and come in a little faster as you can go over the lines a bit and then correct to a perfect position by the time you're fully pulled in.
