MarchHare gave his reasoning for parking next to somebody which seems somewhat silly, but makes much more sense than yours. Parking in the first available spot, even if it happens to be next to somebody, is a perfectly logical rationale for selecting a place to park your vehicle.

If you were to say that you select a parking spot in a lot entirely at random, that would be perfectly reasonable.

Additionally, in a situation where a parking lot is say 75% empty and there are two spots adjacent to another vehicle, that one would randomly select a spot and not eliminate those two spots from the list of places one is considering to park, is also perfectly reasonable.

However, correct me if I'm wrong, you seem to be implying that you would actively seek out the two aforementioned spots next to a vehicle in the middle of nowhere? Yeah you said you won't hit it (clearly haven't lived in Lethbridge ) but still, just trying to understand why you would do that?
