But wouldn't it be a good rule of thumb to leave a spot between, if possible?

Hey, I could go buy a handicapped sign and be done with it. Good parking, wide stalls. Problem solved, right?

But the cost would be that I would then be taking a spot that I think others are more likely to need.

I just see this issue as common courtesy.
