After Risebrough determined he was too old and wanted to trade him at the draft, and Badger Bob Johnson at the Pittsburgh table reportedly stood up and started screaming "GET HIM!!!!" while pounding the table, the flames dumped the "over the hill" mullen to Pitts for some draft picks if I recall.
As for the "too old" aspect, consider Mullen's Pittsburgh stats for the first few seasons:
GP, Goals, A, Points
1990-91 Pittsburgh Penguins NHL 47 17 22 39
1991-92 Pittsburgh Penguins NHL 77 42 45 87
1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins NHL 72 33 37 70
1993-94 Pittsburgh Penguins NHL 84 38 32 70
Bad, bad trade for the Flames.
Highly underappreciated player. Scored 51 goals as a Flame in the cup winning year and finished a +51 on the season. 24 points in 21 playoff games to win the cup. Star who never sought the attention.
One of the few Flames to ever be a First Team All Star
Won two Lady Byng Trophies as a Flame.
Highly durable player despite his size as well.
I wasn't a fan of his when he was here, but definately a player who I appreciate more now. He should be honoured with a Forever a Flame thing as well.
