It's not that we like unimaginative or cookie cutter cars. We don't like ugly cars that don't flow or look like they have diseases..
I've found that cars makers have this tendency to "refresh" certain models by bolting on more diseased looking lumps and body moulding that doesn't fit with the original ethos of the vehicle.
One of my favorite designs in recent years was the 2007-2011 European 5-door Civic. Everything just flowed well together and the design was sleek. The Type-R version was restrained and cohesive but aggressive at the same time.
Now it has a tumours in the front and went to totally unimaginative and looks like an ugly tuner car.
