My mother is one of those people, owning a vehicle much larger than she needs... on her fourth SUV now. Bit of an anomaly as she lived in the Caribbean for 40 years so winter roads are more intimidating than they would be to normal people. Her reasoning, in order of importance: 1) winter driving/AWD traction/getting out of deep snow 2) easier to get into than a small car, and 3) visibility/blind spots. Are these reasons valid? I dunno, but I bet one of these three reasons is a factor for the majority of people who seemingly have no business being in an SUV, and I figure she's worked hard enough to buy whatever vehicle she wants.
