Look at an average EDM producers Set up and the one thing you will find in all of them is one of these (or something like it):

It's a midi keyboard (I have that exact one  ). They play and record the notes just like you would on a piano. Only difference is it feeds the information into a computer where you have the freedom to change the sound, add effects and make corrections.

See, the bolded is the part where you lose me. So they can just change and manipulate the sound? What's the point of playing it then?
Like I've admitted, I know I'm simply missing something and I know that some the better ones record all their own samples themselves on numerous instruments, and I can appreciate that, but it's simply not for me.
