Also, a lot of bigger hip-hop artists are going with a live band. Kendrick Lamar, JayZ, Outkast all have live bands...I think the reason smaller guys don't is simply cost and the live band makes the experience so much better.

Oh don't get me wrong there are guys who do amazing things with sequencers, controllers and even turntables (I'd recommend checking out ArabMuzik and Glitch Mob for some awesome examples). I was referring to DJ's who have their turntables and a mixer and don't scratch or anything like that. The Afrojack's, Avicii's, Tiesto's and Hardwell's of the world. They're not performing music when they're on stage. I do still without a doubt consider all of them to be incredible musicians in the studio (Sans Tiesto who is a fraud).
I'd group Deadmau5 in with those guys too. His "Live" performance is BS. He fades in stems of his own music. Nothing live about it.
This is how EDM played truely live looks like:
He doesn't do that anymore though, cause that's not what EDM fans want.

I appreciate the fact that you acknowledge that you don't get it, but this is seriously one of the most ridiculous things I have ever read. They are composing music just like any composer.
Look at an average EDM producers Set up and the one thing you will find in all of them is one of these (or something like it):
It's a midi keyboard (I have that exact one

). They play and record the notes just like you would on a piano. Only difference is it feeds the information into a computer where you have the freedom to change the sound, add effects and make corrections.
Here is an example of an EDM artist at work in the studio (skip to the 1 minute mark for the actual music part):
Still just playing COD? I can provide many more examples of how producing EDM looks like if you'd like.
