The wife and are in a tent, so walk in sites are viable option for us, and in the past we've managed to snag a site leaving the city after work on Friday. Depends where you go I guess. A group of friends and my wife and I have been tent camping for the last two years together. We usually leave town Friday around noon and do just fine.
We have a great spot we frequent often, I'd recommend it to you, but then you'd be competition, and I'd have to destroy you.
