He's also bang-on with his comment about lack of minorities. That was by far the most striking thing that stood out for me on my first trip home after living in Calgary for several months. I recently looked at my old high school yearbook; in my class of ~400 graduating students, there were three visible minorities. THREE!
I'm a minority (half Indian half white), born in Montreal and we took a vacation out to halifax/moncton/cape when I was about 8 or 9. After a nice dinner took a long drive down the coast and stopped at a look about point. Couple guys came out waving a gun saying our kind isn't welcome in those parts.

My Folks have never been back, I went back once as a teenager for a hockey tournament, but just stayed in Halifax and didn't really feel any animosity. But we stayed on the Military base there and didn't venture out too too much. And I was surrounded by white hockey people

One heard few stories from black people who grew in up Nova Scotia that it was essentially a two class system, everyone was (Asian/Indian/Arab etc) was OK to be in white areas but really tried to push black people together and away from others.

With that said Newfoundland is bleeping awesome!!! But it's fairly far and expensive to get to from NB.
