I may be wrong, but I don't think there's a buy-in for the players. AFAIK, Valve (the company that makes Dota 2) put in the first $1.5M and the rest of the pot has come from fans around the world buying "The Compendium". I don't know what The Compendium is, but apparently it costs $10, with $2.50 from each purchase going towards the prize pool. Quick napkin math would indicate that about 3.7 million people purchased The Compendium.
[Edit]
A Google search reveals that The Compendium is a collection of in-game items and perks for Dota players.
