The beauty is, is you actually have 4 suits if you have a black and grey. If the pants and jacket match, wear a tie. If you mix and match the pants and jackets, no tie. At least that is the rule I follow.

I have to agree and disagree on the bolded part. Don't wear a black suit, unless it's a funeral or you're protecting the President.
Grey lasts forever. I actually own 2 grey suits (one dark and one lighter), and all I have to do is change up the shirt and tie and they always look different. I've had both suits for 3 or 4 years now.
Careful with pinstripes. Some people can pull it off and most can't.
