The problem with upside is you have to live up to it. You also have to have opportunity to prove you have it. A guy like Baertschi is supposed to have a lot of upside, but he hasn't shown it in two seasons. He's running out of opportunities to show it. A guy like Jankowski and Gillies may have upside, but they are also in no position to show that upside in the pro ranks. These are guys that should retain their rank, based on potential, but not be as high as guys who are right there and ready to step in, regardless of potential. Jankowski and Gillies may find themselves on the outside looking in come their opportunity to show their stuff, simply because other players have established themselves in positions that they would be fighting for. That has to be considered, and why some guys are going to be left lower in the ranks even though they have good skills and good upside.
