I think Baertschi got in trouble last year because of simple defensive reads. I think Hartley has shown he has patience for thinking players that make mistakes but not players that won't learn and build on the structures he's trying to put in place.
His gaffs weren't just rookie mistakes they were failure to play within a system mistakes which would drive NHL coaches batty.
If he does his time in the video room, gets the system and positioning down, his talent will rise to the top and he'll be a solid NHL hockey player. If he freelances defensively he won't.

I believe the straw that broke the camel's back last season was a backcheck where he followed a player in instead of breaking for the second man on a backchecked two on one.
