What always seems to be missing from these old lists is any sort of wow factor, where you felt a player truly had the potential to be a star (outside of Phaneuf, which was a deservedly hyped pick). I don't ever remember getting excited about the potential of a Flames prospect in the way I am about the current crop. Who knows if they will ever turn into stars, but in previous years we'd be putting all our hopes into a Morgan Klimchuck level guy, and hoping he would surprise (even though you never expected it to happen). No offense to Klimchuck.
I think other than Phaneuf, back in the day there were players that "could" be impact players or productive NHLers, versus the modern list that "should" play.

I doubt the entire top 10 list we come up with will be an all star team, in fact we know very well that half of them won't. But if the Flames turn the 2014 prospect list into 3 star players, 3 solid contributors, and 3 depth players then they move way up the standings.
